Academic Conversations

Building Communication Skills

At VVMS, we believe that students learn best when they are at the center and when students are interacting with each other. The new common core standards require students to have effective communication skills. We want to improve critical thinking skills as well as communication skills. Students are working on using evidence, building on each other's ideas, paraphrasing, synthesizing, and elaborating. We believe this will support students in their writing and their performance on the CA state tests. This draws on the research of Zaretta Hammond and Jeff Zwiers. In class, students are talking to one another using academic language, vocabulary, and effective sentence structures.  Learn how we use culturally responsive teaching techniques.
