Restorative Practices

Supporting Student Learning

At VVMS, we are committed to using Restorative Practices to build and restore our community. We believe that a responsive and connective learning environment is where students learn best. When a classroom community is strong, students and staff support one another.  

In class, students work in groups and get to know each other. In staff meetings, we use ice breakers, circles and activities to build community.

Our Support Services

When disagreements arise, teachers give students an opportunity to self-regulate their emotions. Teachers remind students of our school values, classroom agreements, and reaffirm connection. Teachers also work with students to restore broken relationships, using mediation and 1 on 1 conversations.  

Counselors use push-in counseling support, to maximize learning time in classrooms.  

If serious conflicts occur, students are given an opportunity to mediate and get to the root of problems. Counselors use the following restorative questions to repair harm:

  • What happened, and what were you thinking at the time of the incident?
  • What have you thought about since?
  • Who has been affected by what happened, and how?
  • What about this has been the hardest for you?
  • What do you think needs to be done to make things as right as possible?

Homeroom Curriculum

In our homerooms, students get to know each other through circles and community building activities.  

Teachers use curriculum from 2nd Step to support Social Emotional Learning. Students learn to build empathy, manage stress, and prevent bullying.

Weekly Assemblies

At our weekly assemblies, we celebrate a student of the month for the academic growth, leadership skills, and school values. Here we learn about upcoming events. We also recognize one homeroom each month for their hard work.
